What is silk?

Silk is a natural fiber produced by the caterpillars of the mulberry or silkworm moth while spinning their cocoons. It is known for its smooth and lustrous surface, as well as its softness and luxurious quality.

What types of silk are there?

The most well-known are mulberry silk and tussah silk, which is also known as
called wild silk.

Mulberry silk is considered the highest quality and is most commonly used for clothing and bedding. Mulberry silk can be produced in various momme values, with a value between 16-25 mm being common. 19 momme is often the choice for high-quality bedding and clothing.

The term "charmeuse" is also often used for silk. "Charmeuse" refers to a special weave in which the front side has a shiny texture and the back side has a matte, slightly rough texture.

There are countless other types of silk, including Eri silk, crepe de Chine, organza, duchesse silk, etc.

What does MM (Momme) mean?

MM, or momme, is a unit used to measure the density and quality of silk. The higher the momme value, the thicker and higher quality the silk fabric. One momme is approximately 4.34 grams per square meter (g/m²). A momme value between 16 and 25 is often recommended for silk bedding, with 19 momme being a popular choice for everyday use. Thicker fabrics with higher momme values are generally more durable and resistant to wear.

When purchasing silk products, it's worth paying attention to the momme value, as this indicates the durability and quality of the fabric. A higher momme value often means more luxurious and durable silk. However, the momme value alone is not the only quality indicator for silk. The weave of the fabric and, of course, whether the fabric was flawlessly crafted also play a major role.

Why is silk so popular?

Silk offers exceptional comfort and luxury. Its incredibly fine and smooth feel is unique. Silk is temperature-regulating, hypoallergenic, and has a moisture-wicking effect. The fabric is also known for minimizing wrinkles on the skin and hair breakage.

How do I care for silk?

Most silk products can be machine washed at low temperature or
Hand wash only. Use a mild, silk-friendly detergent and air dry silk. Avoid direct sunlight. To ensure you can enjoy your silk products for a long time, we have written our own care instructions. You can find them here !

Is silk sustainable?

Silk is biodegradable and a renewable material, as it is obtained from the breeding of silkworms. However, it is important to ensure that production is environmentally friendly and sustainable. We can guarantee this thanks to the Oeko-Tex label.

Can I use my silk products all year round?

Yes, silk is versatile and can be worn year-round. It's highly ventilating, keeping you cool in the summer and warm in the winter, making it suitable for all seasons.

Is silk suitable for allergy sufferers?

Yes, silk is hypoallergenic and therefore the first choice for allergy sufferers and people with sensitive skin.

Is silk animal-friendly?

Silk production has recently come under increasing criticism from animal rights activists, particularly regarding the traditional method of extracting silk from cocoons. Ethical alternatives already exist, such as Peace Silk (Ahimsa silk), in which the caterpillars are not killed. However, the silk threads obtained this way are not yet of the same quality, and the yarn is currently still a niche product. However, we are very interested in this and hope to be able to add the first Peace Silk products to our range soon.

How do I recognize high-quality silk?

High-quality silk feels smooth, soft, and heavy. It has a natural luster and no visible irregularities in the weave. A laboratory burn test can also confirm the authenticity of silk.

Unfortunately, many foreign online shops are currently operating. They sell supposedly silk products at dumping prices of just a few francs. However, these are usually cheap rayon or silk imitations made of polyester.

Real silk has its price and is not even sold so cheaply among wholesalers.

It is therefore best to pay attention to appropriate certificates and only buy from trustworthy suppliers.
